Overview & Eligibility

A private driving licence is valid for 20 years or until the holder turns 40 years of age (whichever occurs earlier). After 40, it is renewed for 10 years, and after 50, every 5 years. Renewal can be completed online via Sarathi Parivahan with Aadhaar authentication.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the grace period for DL renewal in India?

Under the Motor Vehicles Act, you can renew your DL up to 1 year before expiry and within 1 year after expiry. If renewed within 1 year of expiry, no driving re-test is required.

What happens if DL is expired for more than 1 year?

If expired for more than 1 year, you may be required to pass the driving skill test again at the RTO, along with a late penalty fee.
